American Style Beer-Battered Onion Rings
Here's a simple recipe:
1.5 cups of flour
1.5 cups of beer
pinch of salt
*of course I use Maui Onions...
Around the world, there are different types of fried food
Tempura
from Japan
This style of cooking actually came from the Portuguese who established
missionaries in the southern part of Japan.
Of course the Japanese made it their own by making it very light
and crispy without being greasy.
Here's a simple Tempura batter recipe that you can make at home:
2 egg yolks
2 cups of ice water
2 cups of sifted flour
*I like to add in some potato starch - just alittle
Mix the ingredients together, but don't over mix or use a hand-mixer. It should be thin like pancake batter, lumpy is OK. Dip in the vegetables into the batter and deep fry, the oil temperature should be 340 degrees F.
Secret: Use ice cold water and keep batter cold.
